DOST to open S&T week in Kalinga

BICUTAN, Metro Manila – The regional science and technology week of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) moves to higher ground on October 10-14, 2017 with opening ceremonies slated at the PLGU-Kalinga Astrodome in Tabuk, Kalinga.

The regional S&T week (RSTW) celebration is a follow through activity of the National Science and Technology Week held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City last July 2017. The regional event features an array of S&T initiatives, inventions, innovations, and programs developed in the region and in the country. This activity supports the current administration's thrust "Science for the People" which aims to bring local technologies and S&T interventions in the regions and provinces.

Lined up for the week long celebration are various activities and exhibits that will highlight DOST initiatives in various fields of science, technology and innovation. The celebration aims to inform the local folks on science initiatives that can be used to improve lives particularly in the countryside.

Some of the exhibits include the mobile Planetarium of DOST-PAGASA and booths that display various food and non-food products of local entrepreneurs.

On October 10, high ranking officials of the DOST led by Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña will officially open the RSTW with exhibits and techno bazaar, followed immediately by a press conference at the PLGU-Kalinga Governor's Hall. In the afternoon there will be the STEAM Forum on 21st Century Leadership for local chief executives and municipal S&T coordinators in CAR at the Kalinga Astrodome. Also, DOST officials, the local media, and other stakeholders will visit DOST-SETUP projects in Bulanao, San Juan, Magsaysay, Dagupan West and Naneng.

On October 11, the RSTW will focus on creating livelihood opportunities and disaster preparedness. To be held in the day are the Annual Summit of Enterprising SETUP Clients and Opportunities or ASENSO and the Technology Forum on Brown Rice Technologies, Iron Fortified Rice, and Emergency Foods. The latter shall to be conducted by the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute. For the whole day, there will be the conduct of the Disaster Summit: A Science Experience for Cordillera School Children, an activity that will promote the culture of safety among the kids.

The following day, October 12, there will be forums on Safe Use of Food Additives and Food Safety at the PLGU-Kalinga Astrodome and on Chocolate Processing, Coffee and Cacao Organic Production and Post Harvest Technologies at the same venue. There will also be a whole day activity on the Deployment of Early Warning System for Disaster-Prone Areas Project (DEWS) and Disaster Preparedness Drill.

On October 13, DOST-CAR will hold the S&T Quiz for Elementary and Secondary Schools in CAR at the PLGU-Kalinga Compound and the blessing of the Provincial S&T Center of Kalinga in Tabuk City. The Disaster Summit and the DEWS Information, Education and Communication seminar and Disaster Preparedness Drill will continue for the rest of the day. Thereafter, the closing and awarding ceremonies will be held at the Kingsquare Davidson Hotel in Tabuk City although the exhibits and techno bazaar will still run until October 14.
