Research, dev’t initiatives boost market competitiveness

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, April 19 (PIA) -- Investing in research and development (R&D) endeavors translates to market competitiveness, according to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

During the recent Business Innovation through S&T (BIST) for Industry Program Forum in Bacolod City, DOST 6 regional director Engr. Rowen Gelonga underscored that now is the right time to level up the engagement with the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through R&D.

“We would like to really emphasize that research and development should be a mainstream activity of our MSMEs if we really aspire to become competitive not only in the local but as well as in the global market,” Director Gelonga said.

Gelonga conveyed United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) recommendation for a country to attain and sustain socio-economic development, it must spend at least one percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) every year for R&D purposes.

Further, the director pointed out that the most competitive economies are those that embrace science, technology, and innovation in their operations, as well as create robust human capital.

Gelonga mentioned DOSTÂ’s continued support among MSMEs in varied levels such as provision of technology transfer activities, trainings, and consultancy services, which are already reaping the benefits.

As a matter of policy, the DOST has been promoting the use of R&D outputs to address public welfare issues and market competitiveness.

“The government, specifically the DOST, would like to partner with you and hopefully in the near future, there will be significant investment on R&D coming from the private sector,” Gelonga said before entrepreneurs during the forum.

Meanwhile, the BIST Forum, which gathered owners of big companies and Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Western Visayas, aimed to introduce the BIST Program to hasten the innovation capacity of Filipino-owned companies or their consortium by encouraging the private sector to pursue R&D.

The BIST Program is one of the components of the Accelerated R&D Program for Capacity Building of R&D Institutions and Industrial Competitiveness, anchored with the DOST’s Science for Change Program
