A Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar has recently ranked third in the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Masidlawin Class of 2020.
Jefferson Salazar graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) under the DOST RA 7687 Scholarship Program.
Republic Act No. 7687, also known as the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families socio-economic status do not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators.
Qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching.
Son of tricycle driver Jose Salazar, and snack vendor Marites Salazar, Jefferson was granted the scholarship in 2010.
According to DOST, being unable to attend the PMA rites due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Salazars parents were limited to celebrating their sons success from the confines of their home in Barangay Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City.
Sobra talaga ang saya namin kahit nasa pandemic tayo ngayon (We are really happy despite being in the middle of the pandemic right now,) said the mother, who expressed much joy despite the hardships brought about by the pandemic.
Despite much concern regarding their sons chosen profession, the couple expressed their support for him, citing the 2013 Zamboanga Siege as one of the motivators that drove their son to tread the PMA path.
I am happy and proud of his achievement in the academy. It is his ambition to be a soldier, said the father.
